Character Information

Seo Hyeyoung (Obstetrician) / Jang Seo Hee
Obstetrics second year fellow ->Section chief of one local hospital.Workholic person who lives 365 days in hospital. She has issued many articles as well as has competent surgery skill. She wants to remain in school as a professor. She is a pro-choicer on abortion. She takes a positive position on re-build the abortion law which is not realistic. If she should choose one between mother and baby in emergency case, she surely save mother without any hesitation sacrificing baby.

Now, she faces a difficulty. While she has dated with Mr. Yoon who is senior officer in her hospital, she finds out her own pregnancy. But, Mr. Yoon already has a legal wife. After she does a lady’s abortion operation who bear disabled baby, she is dispatched to a local hospital.

Lee Sang Shik (Pediatrician) / Ko Joo Won

Doctor who is in charge of newborn critical patient unit.

He has a character who is half child care center nanny, half doctor. Straight, a little bit inflexible character who likes baby very much and care very well.

Accidently, one day, he is trapped in elevator with Seo Hye Young and treated her morning sickness. After that accident, he meets her again in hospital operation clinic, then, he become a sole person who know her pregnancy.

When he sees she throw a tantrum to unfairness at the time of debate with patient, he tell to other person that she is a kind lady. Because of that comment, he is treated as a not ordinary man. But, he is interested in Hye Young who is little cynical, but open heart to patient. Rare man who sees her character as it is, not thinking she has too violent temper, too smart to get close.

Close friend with Hye Young – Alumnus of preschool, elementary school, and high school.

There is unique feeling between them which is less than love, more than friendship. He catches the sensitive atmosphere between Hye Young and Sang Shik. His heart become unique when Sang Shik carries Hye Young on his back, At that time, Hye Young is in crisis of abortion. He thinks the baby’s father should be Sang Shik, so, he let Hye Young’s mother know her situation and relationship with Sang Shik.

He has opposite position against abortion and he is Catholic. He is a good sterility clinic doctor who receives belief from patient.

The top authority in field of liver, pancreas.

He has lived in works only like any other person who succeed in early age. His wife is tired with that kind of husband, and he lived separately upon her request.

Even during separation period, he doesn’t feel any inconvenience as he is not so interested in family life. He sees Hye Young as a capable doctor who has many possibilities. Surely, he feels attractiveness about Hye Young who is smart and enthusiastic. As he is on separation and both spend lots of time together, they become to have affairs. He doesn’t think Hye Young’s pregnancy seriously. He think she know Hye Young very well and he believe Hye Young take abortion operation by herself.

Ahn Kyung Woo (Obstretric second year resident) / Song Joong Ki,  Resident under Hye Young.

Typical case who choose doctor course due to the economic reason rather than sense of mission. He joins obstetric section as he failed to join skin care section.

His thinking is continuously, as soon as receiving doctor license, opening skin care clinic. As a result ,he spent very difficult time under Hye Young who start work even from 5:50 AM.

Kim Young Mi (Nurse at delivery room) / Lee Young Eun
She is dispatched to obstetric section from newborn critical patient clinic as she was too sensitive. Though she is kind, she is not so smart.She is so naïve that she believe one resident’s reason to leave her saying his family do not agree marriage with her because of fortune teller’s words, that is, their marriage would result not good ending. She still has lingering affection, even she visited several other fortune tellers to find out their marriage will really cause bad result.

Synopsis

At the time of war, in 1636, Choi Jin-lip donates his fortune to a crowd of refugees out of generosity when they flood into his quiet village. Choi Guk-sun is unhappy with his grandfather being too generous with poor people. Man-gap, one of the refugees, and Kim Man-bae, Jin-lip’s tenant, bear grudge against Guk-sun over his arrogance. The whole world what Guk-sun believed to revolve around him seems to change. Man-bae’s father, Kim Ja-chun buys the land Choi Jin-lip gave to his slaves for free. A group of refugees led by Gil-man takes a commission from Ja-chun.
After witnessing all the changes, Guk-sun comes to realize what his grandfather tried to say. Guk-sun leaves for Hanyang to stand on his own feet once he learns the family’s decision to put him up for adoption to an affluent family.

Guk-sun happens to settle down at Jang Gil-taek’s place where he comes to realize the power of wealth. Aside from Jang’s ability to accumulate fortune, Guk-sun sees his cruel side when it comes to making money.
Guk-sun feels confused finding a proper answer to the question, “Would it be the right way to live caring only about one’s gain while neglecting the poor?”

Jang Gil-taek and Yu Hyeong-won order Guk-sun to reclaim barren land in Gyeong-ju province by giving him a book named “NongsaJiksul(The Agricultural Techniques)”. Guk-sun borrows seed money from the government office to start his reclamation work in Gyeong-ju.

He gathers villagers and introduces performance-related pay which results in a huge success. Kim Ja-chun and Man-bae start to get nervous about Guk-sun’s success.

Synopsis:

Lee Dae Gil (Jang Hyuk) — He was the son of nobility. During the Manchu invasion his family perished and he was reduced to the living condition no different than a slave. On the streets of the market he learned how to catch runaway slaves and he became a slave hunter.

Song Tae Ha (Oh Ji Ho) — He was a safety escort and friends of the crown prince when he was captured as a hostage during the Manchu invasion and brought over to China. After 8 years he returned to Joseon (Korea) but he was sentenced to death. In order to escape he took over the identity of a training instructor.

Un Nyun/Kim Hye Won (Lee Da Hae) — Originally a slave that shared a love relationship with Dae Gil, the son of the master house. She ran away from the master house and took on the name ‘Hye Won’ and came to live as the daughter of a noble.

Eop Bok (Gong Hyung Jin) – Originally a tiger catcher who due to debt was sold into slavery. He dreams of a new world where there is no yangban (nobility) and nobi (slave); he becomes someone who kills nobles. He was seized by Dae Gil when he ran away and he once again lived as a slave where he later on organized a revolt of the slaves.

Hwang Chul Woong (Lee Jong Hyuk) – An officer who committed betrayal and murder for his own ambition. Hwang Chul Woong betrayed his friend Tae Ha, the best Joseon warrior, in order to fulfill his ambition and take Tae Ha’s place. After betraying Tae Ha, he becomes a ruthless character going after Tae Ha to kill him.

General Choi (Han Jung Soo) — The brain and wisdom of the slave hunter gang akin to Guan Yu of The Three Kingdoms stories. In <Chuno> General Choi warmly protects Dae Gil (Jang Hyuk) like a real hyung (older brother). He also gives sharp advice to Dae Gil in the ways of slave hunter and he becomes Dae Gil’s right hand man.

Wang Son (Kim Ji Suk) — The youngest member of the slave hunter gang Wang Son whose character is in charge of cooking, doing laundry and other dirty work yet also very good in catching (slaves). PICS TO COME Sul Hwa (Kim Ha Eun) — Her story in Chuno starts with her being part of a travelling musician group. She meets Dae Gil (Jang Hyuk) by chance and throws herself in with the slave hunter gang and accompanies them. Regardless of the harsh treatments from the slave hunter gang, she is undeterred, stays chatty and keeps a cheerful persona. Viewers will embrace this different fun character Sul Hwa. On the other hand, because of her guilty feeling of having to sell her self, she couldn’t confess her love to Dae Gil (Jang Hyuk). “Entering Korea’s top prestigious university is a breeze if you are equipped with perseverance, study skills and a careful strategy”

Kang Seok-ho, a former juvenile delinquent–turned-lawyer, is requested to take care of the liquidation of Byeong-mun High School. Looking at the difficult situation the school goes through, Seok-ho decides to save the school and the one and only solution he comes up with to keep the school from breakup is produce as many as Cheon-ha University (CU) applicants.
Seok-ho expects that if the school continues to increase the number of CU applicants every year, more students want to apply for the school, and that helps Byeong-mun overcome its financial difficulties. He is allowed to set up a special class on condition that he would bring 5 students in three days and raise their grades to the point where they can enter Cheon-ha University without difficulty.
Meanwhile, a group of creditors barges into Hwang Baek-hyeon’s place. Baek-hyeon, a student of Byeong-mun high, is a juvenile delinquent who has no interest in study. Out of sympathy, Seok-ho mobilizes all the knowledge he can to save Baek-hyeon’s family. He emphasizes the importance of learning to Baek-hyeon by saying “If you don’t want to be deceived by others, all you can do is study, study and study!!!”
Full of great anticipation, Seok-ho embarks on the special class. He makes the five students live together and invites high-profile instructors.

“Jejungwon” is the hospital which American missionary named Allen established on April 1885. It was the first western style

 hospital in Korea. “Jejungwon” was the space where western medical science, such as surgery, was provided to Korean. It

started to educate young Koreans about medical science from March 1886. This education came to success when first 7

graduated turned out to be doctor. Those 7 young Korean were received first western doctor license in Korea.

Out of the alumnus, Park Seo Yang was taken as a model of main character, “Hwang Jung”

Baek Do Yang (Yeon Jung Hoon)
A high official of Chosun who is shaken by the title of ‘second class, second greatest’.
The period of chaos dropped his social position,
Nonetheless, he was able to put on a bigger wing of Medical Science instead of dropped social position. He was born as a son of a high official in Chosun and grew up to be a confucian scholar in Sung Gyoon Gwan, Chosun’s university. He lived a life that everyone wanted. However as he became interested in western medical science, his safe and secure life was totally rattled.
He was expelled from Sung Gyoon Gwan because of his interest in western medical science books, and his interest in opening society created a conflict with his father who was a conservative. As a child his mother was driven out of the house because she was studying western literature, and his father died in civil war. The one person who stayed by his side was Yoo SUk Ran, and believed that she will stay with him forever. However she started wavering. So he gave up studying abroad and decided to become an herb doctor in Jae Jung Won. This hints that he will have an inevitable conflict with the genius, Hwang Jung.
Baek Do Yang, who was born rich and smart, was always the greatest wherever he went. However in front of Hwang Jung, he was always second in means of medical science and love. Such disappointment leads him into becoming a cat’s paw of Japan’s colonial medical policy; however he realizes his big mistake and comes back to Jae Jung Won. There he puts on the wing of medical science and grows by himself.

Yoo Suk Ran (Han Hae Jin)

A woman who overcame the pattern of Chosun Women, who could not choose love or life.
Woman who threw away her own yoke herself, then made up her own life.
A new type women of the opening period of chosun..
Due to his father who was an international trade merchant, she experienced various western civilization as she grew up. She grew up with a burning passion of a bigger world, but as the passion grew, the reality of Chosun brought her frustration. The only person who understood such frustration was Bae Do Yang.
It has been 10 years since Yoo Suk Ran, a middle class women, knew the upper class Baek Do Yang. Suk Ran grew naturally in midst of marriage talks between her and Do Yang. However, her life is rattled as Hwang Jung appears in her life. Hwang Jung’s passion and talents attract her. The wavering between Hwang Jung (who hid his true identity), and Do Yang (who was around her for a long time) makes her even stronger person.
With her English skills she helps translation of Allan, the director of Jae Jung Won. As she helps Chosun women who refuses medical diagnosis she feels the need of women doctors and becomes a gynecologist in Jae Jung Won.
Yoo Suk Ran, who chose to control her own life waiving yoke of chosun woman who can not choose love and life herself, is real new type woman in the opening period of chosun.

Hwang Jung / So Geun Gae (Park Yong Woo)

Chosun’s first surgical doctor , born of a butcher.
He attempted to give hope to people through the art of healing during the chaotic period.
Born of a butcher, his name was ‘So Geun Gae’ which means ‘a dog that weighs little’. In other words, it means, son of dog. He transformed from the ‘butcher’s little dog’ who carried on with life believing that killing cows is divine, into the ‘noble student Hwang Jung’ due to the relationship with his long rival ‘Baek Do Yang’.
While trying to earn his mother’s medical bill, he became involved in a case. He was assisting an autopsy experiment, which is illegal, of Baek Do Yang, son of a high official. As the case grew, So Gen Gae ran away carrying an identity tag that explained him as the ‘noble student Hwang Jung’. While escaping, he got shot by a gun. Then Yoo Suk Ran, Baek Do Yang’s beloved, saved him knowing he is Hwang Jung, son of high official.
With Suk Ran’s help Hwang Jung gets a surgery from Doctor Allan, and through this he becomes a doctor in Jae Jung Won, the first western surgical hospital in Chosun. He dreams of helping those like his mom who are unable to get medical treatment because of social position and poverty. However this indicates that he is in danger of exposure of real identity, and also that he will be in endless competition with Baek Do Yang.
With his love for Suk Ran and passion for medical science, he overcomes all kinds of adversities in Jae Jung Won. And in the future he chooses to become a medical soldier while Chosun fights for independence.
Hwang Jung, who overcomes despair and attempted to give hope to other people through medical science in the midst chaos! He is obviously a true forerunner of Chosun medical science.
